Why trenches fail, and what the price assumes
Almost every failed trench reinstatement is a backfill problem, not an asphalt problem. Fill dropped in and driven over settles for months, and the surface follows it down. The reinstatement price assumes the backfill has been compacted in layers to a firm, dry base. If we open the trench line and find loose or wet fill, work stops, you get photos and a written price for the extra compaction or base work, and nothing extra happens until you say yes.
The surface itself is straightforward: saw-cut edges so the new asphalt keys into sound material, a tack coat so it bonds, and hot-mix compacted in a layer at least 40 mm thick to an M/10-type specification. Permanent hot-mix work carries a 12-month workmanship warranty; the warranty does not cover settlement of fill we did not place.
Working in the road reserve: the Auckland Transport rules
The Utilities Access Act 2010 and the National Code of Practice for Utility Operators’ Access to Transport Corridors govern any dig in the road corridor. In practice that means a corridor access request lodged with Auckland Transport before excavation, a temporary traffic management plan while the work is open, and reinstatement to the corridor standard. The vehicle crossing between the road and your boundary is the owner’s to maintain, but work on it is still inside the corridor and still needs the approval. We handle the traffic management in the quote; the corridor access request usually sits with whoever is doing the excavation.
Who pays for the reinstatement
The party that dug the trench is normally responsible for putting the surface back. Most drainlayer, plumber and electrician quotes say one of two things: reinstatement to match the existing surface is included, or reinstatement is excluded. Owners should read that line before the digger arrives, because an excluded reinstatement becomes the owner’s bill. On body corporate land the common-property rule applies, and on cross-lease driveways the trench is usually the responsibility of whoever commissioned the service connection, not the shared-cost pool.
