How deep do services need to be?

Standard depths: power and telecommunications 600mm to top of duct, gas 750mm, water 900mm. Under trafficked carriageway these may increase to 750/900/1200mm. Always confirm against the specific utility's standards — these are general defaults, not project specs.

What's MDD and why does 95% matter?

Modified Maximum Dry Density is the lab-measured maximum compaction achievable for the granular material under specified compaction effort. Field compaction to 95% MDD is the standard pass threshold — below that, the material will continue to settle under traffic and the surface will fail prematurely.

How do you prove you hit 95% MDD?

Nuclear densometer testing on the compacted layers, or a sand-cone test as an alternative. AT and NZTA work typically requires testing at specified frequencies (e.g., one test per 50m² of trench) and the test certificates form part of the reinstatement records submitted to the owner.

What surface course is required?

The surface course must match the existing pavement in material grade and depth — typically AC10 or AC14 hot-mix at 40-50mm compacted depth. Polymer-modified mix is required on heavy-trafficked routes and arterials. Cold-mix is not accepted as a permanent reinstatement surface.

Are sealed joints required?

Yes — the joint between the new reinstatement and the existing pavement is sealed with hot-poured rubberised sealant after the surface course is compacted. This is a non-negotiable part of M/4 compliance and is one of the most commonly skipped steps on non-compliant work.

What happens if a reinstatement fails inspection?

AT can require the contractor to remove the failed reinstatement and redo it to spec at the contractor's cost, plus retest. Failed inspections are recorded against the utility operator and the contractor — repeat failures can result in suspension from working in the corridor.

Why proper trench spec matters

A trench reinstatement is a vertical slice through the pavement structure. If any layer is under-compacted or under-spec, that layer settles differentially from the surrounding pavement, the surface develops a depression, and water enters at the joint. Six months later, the reinstatement is a linear pothole.

Done properly, a trench reinstatement should perform indistinguishably from the surrounding pavement for the full design life of both. Done badly, it's the most common cause of localised pavement failure on otherwise sound roads.

Common compliance failures we see

Three issues come up repeatedly: under-compaction of the basecourse (under-90% MDD instead of 95%+), missing sealed joint at the surface, and surface course depth less than the surrounding pavement (so the patch sits low and forms a water-catching depression).
