How to choose a pothole repair contractor in Auckland: 7-point checklist

Most asphalt contractors won't quote without a site visit. Most won't honour a fixed price. Most won't fix in the rain. Here's what to ask before you book.

1. Fixed price from a photo — not "we'll come look"

The standard Auckland asphalt contractor process: call for a quote, wait 3–5 days for someone to drive out, receive a ballpark figure, wait again for a written number. By then the pothole has grown.

A site visit before quoting is a red flag, not a service. It signals the contractor can't price off information you already have — a photo, some dimensions, a description of the surface. It also opens the door to price creep: the written number changes once they're on site.

What good looks like: send a photo, get a fixed written price within 10 minutes. No site visit required. No "it depends." The price you see is the price on the invoice.

2. Real warranty in writing

A 12-month workmanship warranty is the floor, not a selling point. Any contractor who can't offer this in writing is telling you something about how confident they are in the work.

Ask for the warranty document before you book. Check two things: the duration and what it actually covers. Some contractors offer 12 months on materials only — that excludes the labour, which is where failures happen. You want 12 months on workmanship, in writing, on the invoice.

3. Public liability insurance — $2M minimum

If a contractor damages your property, injures someone, or a third party makes a claim against work done on your site, your exposure depends entirely on whether the contractor carries current public liability insurance.

An uninsured contractor on your property means you absorb the risk. This matters more for body corporates and commercial property managers who have obligations to owners and tenants.

Ask for a certificate of currency before any work starts. $2M public liability minimum is standard. If they can't produce one, don't book.

4. Wet-weather guarantee

Auckland gets 1,200mm of rain per year. A contractor who reschedules when it rains will reschedule constantly — and every week a pothole sits open, it gets bigger. Water enters the sub-base, the surrounding asphalt weakens, and a repair that would have cost $300 becomes a $900 job.

Ask before you book: "Do you provide a geotagged before-and-after photo report?" If the answer is no, or if they offer to text you a photo after the job, that's not a report.

6. Response time — 48 hours or less

The longer a pothole sits, the more expensive the eventual repair. Water enters through the break, undermines the sub-base, and the surrounding asphalt begins to crack outward. A fortnight of Auckland winter rain can double the size of a small pothole.

Ask for the contractor's service level: "What is your typical time from quote acceptance to repair?" Anything beyond 48 hours means the damage keeps growing while you wait. It also means the price you were quoted may no longer cover the scope of work.

Ask: "Can you give me two client references in Auckland I can call?" If they hesitate, offer a testimonial page instead, or say references aren't something they share, that tells you what you need to know.
