Drainlayers: Driveway Reinstatement From Your Trench Photo

The drainage is in, tested and passed. The backfill is placed. And running across the client's driveway is a metre-wide strip of exposed metal where their asphalt used to be. The pipework was the hard part, but the strip is what the client looks at every morning.

You could throw cold mix at it and move on. You have probably seen what that looks like at month twelve: a sunken tram line with a crooked edge, and a client who tells people the drainage job "wrecked the driveway". The pipework gets forgotten. The scar gets remembered.

Why drainlayer cuts fail differently to slot cuts

A sparkie's 100mm slot and your metre-wide crossing are not the same repair. Narrow slots fail because nothing compacts in them. Wide cuts fail for the opposite reason: there is plenty of room to compact, and it does not happen.

A metre-wide trench through a driveway takes real backfill volume. If that volume goes in as one big pour with a quick pass of the plate, it will keep settling for a year or more. The asphalt on top follows it down. The result is the classic drainage-job dip: a strip that thumps under every wheel and holds a puddle after rain.

The other difference is exposure. Your cuts cross the full width of the driveway, right where every vehicle drives. A narrow slot can hide. A crossing cannot. Every defect in the reinstatement sits in the wheel path, in plain view, on the part of the property the client uses most.

Compaction in lifts, not one big pour

The reinstatement that stays flat is built in layers. The sequence matters more than the materials:

  1. Backfill placed in lifts of controlled depth, not one dump

  2. Each lift compacted before the next goes on

  3. Basecourse brought up to design level and compacted to a tight, even finish

  4. Hot-mix asphalt laid and compacted against clean vertical edges

  5. Joints sealed so water cannot track down the seam

Skip step two and everything above it is riding on air pockets. That is where the month-twelve dip comes from. It is not the asphalt failing. It is the asphalt honestly reporting what happened underneath it.

We work over your backfill or take the trench from basecourse up, whichever suits how you run your jobs. Either way, the compaction record is part of what the client gets. Cut back to straight lines, not the trench shoulder

Here is the detail clients notice before anything else: the shape of the patch. A reinstatement that follows the ragged edge of the excavation reads as a scar. The same repair cut back to straight, parallel saw lines reads as deliberate work.

Cutting back past the trench shoulder does two jobs at once. Cosmetically, it gives clean geometry. Structurally, it moves the joint away from the disturbed ground at the edge of the dig, onto asphalt that still has solid support under it. Joints over disturbed ground open up. Joints over sound base stay closed.

The extra strip of asphalt costs little against the whole job. It is the difference between a crossing the client stops seeing after a month and one they point out to their neighbours.

Get the water off the strip

A reinstated crossing is a joint across the driveway's drainage path. If the new surface sits even slightly low, water tracks along the seam, sits against the joint, and works its way in. One winter of that and the edges start to go.

The fix is built in at laying time: match the existing crossfall so the strip sheds water the same way the rest of the driveway does, and finish the surface flush or a touch proud to allow for the small settlement that follows any trench. Standing water on a fresh reinstatement is not a cosmetic issue. It is the first symptom of the next failure.

Timing: let the backfill finish moving first

Permanent reinstatement laid the day after backfilling carries a risk: even well-compacted fill takes some initial settlement. Where the programme allows, a short gap between backfill and permanent surfacing lets that movement happen before the asphalt goes on, not after.

That does not mean leaving the client with an open trench for weeks. A temporary cold-mix cap keeps the driveway usable and safe while the fill settles, then the permanent hot-mix reinstatement goes in as one clean visit.
