Cable and Fibre Trench Reinstatement for Electricians
The EV charger is commissioned, the mains upgrade is signed off, or the fibre lead-in is live. Between the switchboard and the street sits a narrow slot cut across the customer's asphalt, backfilled and waiting for someone to close the surface.
You are an electrician, not an asphalt contractor. But the customer sees one job, and the slot is the part they will look at every day. Here is why most slot patches sink, what a lasting reinstatement involves, and how to close the surface without taking on another trade.
Why a 100mm slot patch always sinks
Narrow slots fail in a predictable way. A plate compactor is around 300mm wide. A rammer foot is not much narrower. Neither fits inside a 100mm slot, so the backfill at the bottom of the cut never gets compacted. It gets poked with a shovel handle, at best.
Loose backfill settles under traffic. The slot drops a few millimetres, then a few more with each month of vehicles crossing it, until the patch sits in a tram line across the driveway. Water collects in the depression, works into the joints, and the patch starts breaking out at the edges.
Twelve months later the customer rings you, not the asphalt supplier, because your name is on the invoice. The failure has nothing to do with the mix that went on top. It is a compaction problem, locked in the day the slot was backfilled.
The widen-to-compact rule
The fix sounds backwards: cut the hole bigger. A durable reinstatement widens the cut past the trench shoulders on each side, back to sound asphalt. That does two things.
First, it creates enough width to rebuild the base in compacted layers with real equipment, instead of hoping loose fill stays put. Second, the new joints land on undisturbed material rather than on the fractured edge the trencher blade left behind. Joints over broken shoulders open within a season. Joints cut back to sound asphalt stay tight.
A wider, shallower rectangle with straight saw-cut edges also looks deliberate. A wandering 100mm smear looks like what it is. The same cut-back principle applies to every fixed-price asphalt patch repair that lasts, whatever put the hole there.
EV chargers turned this into a weekly problem
Five years ago a driveway cut was an occasional line on an electrician's job sheet. EV charger installs changed that. The cable route from the switchboard to the garage or parking pad crosses asphalt on a large share of Auckland homes, and every one of those runs ends with the same question: who closes the surface?
Charger customers are also a particular audience. They have just spent real money on a tidy piece of hardware, and they notice finish. A sunken scar across the drive undercuts the whole install. A straight, compacted, hot-mix patch reads as part of the job done properly.
Flowable fill vs compacted metal in narrow slots
Where a slot genuinely cannot be widened, perhaps because it runs hard against a wall or between other services, there is a second route: flowable fill. It is a low-strength cementitious slurry that self-compacts, so nothing needs to fit down the slot. It sets firm overnight and takes an asphalt surface on top.
The practical comparison looks like this:
Compacted metal (GAP basecourse): cheaper material, proven, but it needs enough width for compaction gear. Below roughly plate-compactor width it cannot be done properly.
Flowable fill: costs more per metre, needs no compaction, will not settle. The right answer in slots that must stay narrow.
Loose fill and a smear of cold mix: the cheapest option on day one and the most expensive by the time it has been redone.
Which route suits a given trench depends on width, depth, what services sit in it, and what traffic crosses it. That is a judgement call we make from your photos, not a menu you need to memorise.
If the slot crosses the footpath or berm
A cable run that leaves the property and crosses the footpath, berm or carriageway sits in road reserve, and reinstatement there must meet the corridor manager's requirements. In Auckland that usually means a Corridor Access Request and reinstatement to Auckland Transport's standard, with compaction and materials records to match.
