Cold Mix vs Hot Mix Asphalt NZ — Which to Use for Driveways & Carparks (2026)

Most online guides frame this as a binary: cold mix vs hot mix. That framing is wrong. Professional NZ asphalt repair contractors actually work with three tiers, and choosing the wrong one is how driveways end up patched twice in eighteen months.

The three tiers, in order of lifespan: hot-mix asphalt (HMA), polymer-modified cold-mix (the workhorse most contractors won't volunteer), and standard bagged cold-mix from the hardware shop. Knowing which tier you're being quoted matters for warranty, lifespan, and whether you're paying a fair price. This guide walks through all three, the conditions each one needs, and how to tell which is right for your job.

Hot-mix asphalt — when it's worth the logistics

Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is the long-life standard. Aggregate combined with bitumen at a plant, loaded onto a truck at 150-160°C, delivered to site, placed while still hot, and rolled by a compactor. The bitumen flows during placement, wets every stone, and forms a continuous thermal bond with the surrounding pavement. Done correctly, expect 8 to 12 years of life on a residential driveway and longer on a well-drained commercial carpark.

The conditions HMA needs are strict: dry pavement, ambient temperature at or above 10°C, and a substrate temperature high enough that the mix doesn't lose workability before compaction (a working rule of thumb is keeping the mat above 110°C at the moment the roller passes). Miss any of those and the patch fails early — usually around the edges where the cold pavement chilled the new mix before it could bond.

When hot-mix is the right call

  • Heavy-traffic commercial carparks where the patch sees daily articulated trucks, buses, or fuel-tanker movements

  • Permanent driveway repairs scheduled inside the November-March dry window

  • Multi-patch jobs where the truck-load minimum (4-6 tonnes) is justified by total m² of work

  • Council and AT contracts where the spec sheet calls for HMA explicitly

When hot-mix is the wrong call

  • Anything booked between June and October — Auckland's reliable dry window is five months out of twelve, and ambient under 10°C kills the mix

  • Awkward-access sites where a hot-box truck can't reach the pothole within the cooling window

  • Single small patches on quiet residential driveways — the lifespan upside doesn't justify the per-m² premium

  • Emergency repairs where the pothole has to be trafficable today and you can't wait for plant scheduling

Polymer-modified cold-mix — the workhorse you might never have heard of

This is the tier the binary online guides skip over, and it's the one most Rapidpatch jobs actually use. Polymer-modified cold-mix is bitumen blended with a polymer modifier and high-quality aggregate, bagged or sold in bulk, designed to be applied at ambient temperature without losing the durability that standard cold-mix gives up. The polymer chemistry lets the patch cure under traffic — vehicles driving over it in the first few days actively lock the material into place rather than chewing it out.

Done correctly, expect 3 to 5 years of life on most driveway, body-corp, and light-commercial jobs. Cure time is 6 to 12 hours to full stiffness; the patch is trafficable within minutes of compaction. It works in any weather — rain, water-filled potholes, sub-10°C ambient, doesn't matter. That's the whole point.

The four NZ-available polymer-modified products

  • EZ Street — US-formulated, available through specialist suppliers in Auckland. Strong reputation for cold-weather and wet-application performance.

  • Cemix Bitupatch — NZ-distributed, widely stocked through trade channels. Solid all-rounder for driveway and carpark repairs.

  • UPM (Unique Paving Materials) — international polymer-modified product with a long track record on municipal road repair. Available through select NZ importers.

  • QPR (Quality Pavement Repair) — another international product available in NZ. Comparable performance to UPM and EZ Street.

All four work. The right one for any given job is whichever the contractor stocks consistently and has experience compacting properly. Compaction matters more than brand — a poorly-compacted EZ Street patch will fail before a well-compacted Cemix patch.

Why customers should ask about this tier specifically

A polymer-modified bag costs roughly 3-5x what a standard bagged cold-mix bag costs at the wholesale level. Some contractors only carry standard bagged cold-mix because the margin per job is higher. They aren't necessarily cutting corners on purpose — many of them are working from how they were trained ten or fifteen years ago, before polymer-modified products were widely available in NZ. The result is the same either way: the patch lasts 3-12 months instead of 3-5 years, and the customer is back paying for the same hole twice.

Ask the question explicitly: "Are you using a polymer-modified cold-mix, or standard bagged cold-mix?" If the answer is the second one, ask why — there are genuine reasons (a true emergency repair where you'll redo it permanently in summer), but "that's what we always use" isn't one of them.

Standard bagged cold-mix — emergency only, never permanent

This is the $20-30 bag you find at Bunnings or Mitre 10. It's a basic bitumen-and-aggregate mix without the polymer chemistry. It has a place — DIY temporary patching on a rural driveway, a stop-gap before a contractor can attend, or as Rapidpatch's rapid-response tier when the customer needs a hole made trafficable in the next hour and a permanent repair will follow.

Lifespan is weeks to a few months under normal traffic. The patch fails fast: edges crumble, the centre dishes out, water gets in, the underlying pothole reopens. How to pick the right mix for your job

Decision guide for the four most common Auckland scenarios:

  • Single residential driveway pothole, any time of year → polymer-modified cold-mix. 3-5 year life is more than enough for the surface around it; HMA premium isn't justified for a single patch.

  • Body-corp shared driveway with multiple potholes → polymer-modified cold-mix on the routine maintenance cycle, HMA only if the entire driveway is due for a planned summer overlay.

  • Heavy-traffic commercial carpark, repair scheduled November-March → HMA. Daily truck movements will eat through cold-mix faster than its 3-5 year design life suggests.

  • Emergency winter repair — tenant complaint, public-safety carpark hazard → standard bagged cold-mix as a same-day temporary, then schedule polymer-modified or HMA for the permanent fix in the next two weeks. Don't try to make the emergency tier permanent.

When to push back on the contractor's recommendation

Two scenarios are worth a second conversation. First: if a contractor wants to lay HMA between June and October on a small residential job, ask how they're handling the substrate temperature — they may be doing it correctly with a hot-box truck and infrared heater, or they may be hoping for the best on a cold pavement. The patch will tell you which within six months. Second: if a contractor quotes you a "cold mix" repair without specifying which kind, ask which product. "EZ Street", "Bitupatch", "UPM", or "QPR" is the right answer. "Just standard cold-mix" on a job you want to last more than a year is not.

Common questions

Is polymer-modified cold-mix as good as hot-mix asphalt?

Not quite — HMA still wins on continuous thermal bonding and on long-term life under heavy traffic. But the gap is much smaller than the binary online articles imply. For 80% of NZ driveway and light-commercial jobs, polymer-modified cold-mix gives 3-5 years of life at a fraction of the logistics cost. That's a defensible engineering choice, not a corner cut.

Why don't more contractors offer polymer-modified cold-mix?

Two reasons, neither sinister. First, cost per bag — polymer-modified is meaningfully more expensive than the standard bagged product, so contractors carrying a single tier tend to default to whichever has the higher margin. Second, training — many older crews learned the trade before polymer-modified products were widely stocked in NZ, and standard bagged cold-mix is what they're confident with. The result is a real performance gap, but it's a knowledge gap, not malice.

Can I lay polymer-modified cold-mix myself?

Yes for small driveway jobs if you can source a bag from a specialist supplier. Compaction is the catch — a hand tamp gets you maybe 60% of the density a plate compactor delivers, and density is what locks the polymer chemistry into place. If you're patching a single hole and you can hire a small plate compactor for half a day, the result is reasonable. For multi-patch jobs or anything load-bearing, hire a contractor who'll bring a proper compactor.
