Trench Sank a Year Later: Re-Levelling Cost Factors
There is a line across your driveway where someone dug a trench a year or two ago. It was flat when they left. Now it has sunk into a dip that thumps the suspension every time you drive over it, holds a puddle after rain, and seems a little deeper every few months.
You are not imagining the "deeper every few months" part. Trench settlement is progressive, and the repair cost depends on what is happening under the surface, not just the dip you can see. Here is how the problem works, what the options cost relative to each other, and how to find out whether someone else should be paying.
Why trenches sink at month 6 to 18
When a trench is dug and refilled, the backfill has to be compacted in layers to get back to the density of the ground around it. That takes time and care, and it is the step that gets shortcut when a crew is behind schedule. Loosely placed fill looks fine on the day, passes a quick visual check, then spends the next year consolidating under traffic and rain.
The timing is predictable. Most under-compacted trenches show a visible dip somewhere between 6 and 18 months after the work, because that is how long it takes traffic loading and a wet winter to squeeze the air out of loose fill. Auckland's winter rain accelerates it: water migrates into the loose material, lubricates it, and each wheel pass pumps it tighter and lower.
So the trench was flat when the crew left and is not flat now. The asphalt on top did nothing wrong. The ground under it moved.
Dip or void: the screwdriver test
Before anyone prices the repair, the key question is whether the fill has finished settling or whether there is a cavity forming underneath. A stabilised dip is a modest job. A void that keeps growing is a different job entirely. You can learn a lot in two minutes:
Probe it. Push a long screwdriver into the crack at the edge of the dip. Firm resistance all the way down suggests consolidated fill. If the probe suddenly drops or wobbles into open space, there is a void.
Watch it after rain. A stable dip holds a puddle and drains slowly. A washout keeps swallowing water and grows after every heavy front. If water is pooling and the puddle keeps getting bigger, treat that as a warning sign.
Mark the edges. A chalk line or a dated photo with a coin for scale tells you in a month whether it is still moving.
If the probe finds a void or the dip is still growing quickly, keep vehicles off that line. Voids under asphalt fail suddenly, not gradually.
The repair ladder and what moves the price
There is no single "trench re-levelling" price because the right fix depends on what the settlement has done. Think of it as a ladder, cheapest to dearest:
Surface infill. If the base has finished settling and is sound, the dip is filled and re-surfaced with hot mix, compacted flush to the surrounding level. For a short trench crossing this sits at the small-job end: standard patches are quoted at a fixed price from $450, with hot-mix patching from $700 for larger defects.
Mill and re-lay. If the old patch has cracked along its joints as it sank, the failed asphalt comes out, the top of the fill is trimmed and recompacted, and a new lift goes in. More material, more time, still a one-visit job in most driveways.
Dig out and recompact. If the fill itself is loose or there is a void, filling the top just puts new asphalt on a sinking foundation, and it will dip again. The proper fix removes the failed backfill, rebuilds it in compacted layers, and re-surfaces. This is the dearest rung, and the only one that stays flat when compaction was the original problem.

The one defect where a photo may not be enough
We quote most asphalt repairs at a fixed price from photos, and what to photograph for a fixed price covers the standard set: a wide shot, close-ups, and a size reference in frame.
Trench settlement is the honest exception. A photo shows the dip but cannot always show whether the fill underneath is consolidated or cavitating, and that is the difference between the bottom and top rungs of the ladder. So for this defect we may ask for a short video of the probe test, extra photos after rain, or in some cases a quick look before we fix the number. Once we fix it, it stays fixed: the price you accept is the price you pay, even if the dig tells a worse story than the photos did.
Who pays when the trench was a utility's
If the trench was cut by a water, power, gas or fibre crew, do not pay for the repair before you have asked them to. Utility reinstatement is supposed to be permanent, and settlement within a year or two points back at the original compaction. Contact the utility with your dated photos and the approximate date of the work, ask for their reinstatement contractor to return, and give them a reasonable window.
