Asphalt driveway repair in Auckland sits in an awkward gap. The job is too small for the big civil contractors and too important to leave to chance. This guide sets the four failure types, the three repair tiers, what each costs in 2026, and how to choose between patching, sealing, and a full relay — with Auckland-specific notes on timing and the driveway-meets-road cold joint.

The 4 driveway failure types
Auckland asphalt driveways fail in four recognisable ways. Most driveways show two or three of these at once and the right repair depends on which is dominant.
Potholes — isolated bowl-shaped failures, often at the kerb cut where vehicles slow and turn. Water sits in them after rain, freeze-thaw widens the edges, the hole grows. Easiest to fix early.
Cracks — linear cracks running with traffic (longitudinal) are usually shrinkage; cracks running across (transverse) are usually thermal or reflective from a join underneath. Treat early with crack-seal before they widen and let water through.
Edge break — the asphalt crumbles at the lawn edge, garden bed, or concrete kerb transition. Usually water-driven — once a centimetre is gone, the next centimetre goes faster.
Surface fade and ravelling — the asphalt looks grey-white, loose stones come away, the binder has oxidised. Cosmetic until it isn't. A surface coating can buy 3–5 years if there's no structural issue beneath.

The 3 repair tiers
Three tiers cover almost every Auckland residential driveway. The right choice depends on how much surface is failing and whether the base is sound.
Tier 1 — Quick Fix: cold-mix temporary patch, NZ$350+, holds 6–12 months. Right for emergency repairs ahead of a sale, open home, or insurance assessor visit. Wrong as a permanent solution.
Tier 2 — Permanent Patch: hot-mix, cut-and-fill, compacted, from NZ$700 per patch. 8–12 year life under normal residential use. Right for 1–6 isolated failures on an otherwise sound driveway.
Tier 3 — Full Relay: mill the existing surface, lay fresh asphalt, from NZ$5,000 depending on size and access. 15–20 year life. Right when more than 30% of the surface is failing or the base needs attention.
Timing — how long each tier takes
Quick Fix: 30–60 minutes on site. Driveway usable within an hour.
Permanent Patch: 2–3 hours on site for 1–3 patches. Driveway usable within 2 hours, full strength in 24.
Full Relay: 1–2 days on site for an average residential driveway. Driveway off-limits to vehicles for 48 hours after laying. Lead time to booking 2–4 weeks depending on weather and hot-mix supply.
Auckland-specific considerations
A few things that come up more on Auckland driveways than anywhere else:
Winter timing — hot-mix asphalt needs an ambient temperature above 8–10°C and a dry surface to bond properly. June and July Auckland weather makes that hard. We'll often suggest a Quick Fix in winter and a Permanent Patch in spring, where the budget allows.
The driveway-meets-road cold joint — the join between your driveway and the public road sits on a boundary. AT owns the road side, you own the driveway side, and the joint itself often fails first. We can usually tell from a photo whose responsibility it is, and we'll quote the private side and tell you what to report to AT for the public side.
Body-corp shared driveways — a driveway shared between two or more titles is a body-corp asset and the maintenance fund pays. The chair can authorise small repairs without a full vote.
Pre-sale repairs — if you're selling, a Quick Fix on the day of the open home is often enough to remove the visual flag. For a buyer's pre-purchase inspection, Permanent Patch is what closes the issue cleanly.

Common questions
How long should an asphalt driveway last in Auckland?
A well-built asphalt driveway in Auckland typically lasts 20–25 years before a full relay is needed, provided cracks are sealed early and isolated potholes are patched as they appear. Driveways that get no maintenance often need a relay by year 12–15. Maintenance buys you the back half of the lifecycle.
How do I decide between repair and replace?
Rule of thumb: under 30% surface distress and sound base, repair. Over 30% distress or visible base failure (asphalt pumping, surface depression that returns after patching), relay. The cost crossover usually sits around four to six Permanent Patches in close proximity — at that point a partial mill-and-overlay starts to win on cost per year of life.
Can you patch a driveway in winter?
Hot-mix needs 8–10°C ambient and a dry surface to bond cleanly. June and July Auckland weather makes that hard, but on a dry afternoon between fronts we can usually get a Permanent Patch in. If the weather window is too tight, we'll do a Quick Fix in winter and book the Permanent Patch for September.
The crack is at the join between my driveway and the road — who pays?
The boundary is the legal title line, usually at or near the back of the kerb. Anything road-side of that line is Auckland Transport's responsibility — report it through AT. Anything driveway-side is yours. The cold joint itself often sits right on the boundary and both parties contribute to the failure. Send us photos and we'll mark the line for you.
I'm selling — should I patch the driveway before listing?
Almost always yes for visible potholes — they read as deferred maintenance and buyers price that in heavily. Cracks and surface fade are lower priority. A Permanent Patch on the worst pothole plus a quick crack-seal pass usually pays for itself two to three times over in the offer price.
Who pays for a shared driveway repair?
Shared driveways are usually a body-corp or cross-lease asset — the maintenance fund pays, allocated by unit entitlement at year-end. If there's no body corp and the driveway is on a right-of-way easement, the standard rule is that costs are shared between the titles benefiting from the easement, in proportion to use. Disputes get resolved at the Disputes Tribunal if neighbours can't agree.
