The Freeze-Thaw Myth: Auckland Potholes Are Water
Auckland barely freezes. A frost in the flat suburbs is a talking point, not a season. So why does every July fill your driveway with holes that were not there in March.
If you have read that potholes come from water freezing and expanding in the road, that explanation is real, but it is not yours. It was written for places that spend weeks below zero. Auckland runs a different engine, and knowing which one is running changes what actually fixes the hole.
What the textbook freeze-thaw story actually describes
The classic explanation goes like this. Water gets into a crack. Overnight it freezes and expands by about nine percent. That expansion levers the crack wider. The next day it thaws, the gap stays open, more water gets in, and the cycle repeats until a chunk breaks free and traffic knocks it out.
That is a genuine mechanism. It chews through roads in Central Otago, in Canada, in the northern United States. It needs one thing to work though: repeated hard freezing, night after night, deep enough to freeze the water sitting in the pavement.
Auckland does not offer that. Our winters are wet and mild. The ground rarely freezes. Coastal and low-lying suburbs might not see a single proper frost all winter. Borrowing the freeze-thaw story here is like blaming your power bill on your heating when you do not own a heater.
The engine that actually runs here: saturation and pumping
Auckland's potholes are a water problem, but the water does its damage without ever turning to ice. Here is the real sequence.
Winter is when most of our rain arrives. The base under the asphalt, and the subgrade under that, get and stay saturated. Water has nowhere to drain, so it sits there under the seal.
Now add traffic. Every time a wheel rolls over a crack, it drives down on the saturated layer beneath. Trapped water cannot compress, so it shoots sideways and upward at pressure. That jet scours fine material out of the base and flushes it up through the crack. You have seen the grey slurry that weeps from a crack after rain. That is your base leaving.
The steps, in order:
Winter rain saturates the base and subgrade under the asphalt.
The water cannot drain away, so it stays under pressure.
Traffic pumps that trapped water through any crack, again and again.
Fine material washes out, leaving a void under the surface.
The unsupported asphalt caves in, and the pothole appears.
No ice required. Just water that cannot leave, and wheels that will not stop.
Why Auckland clay makes it worse
The ground under a lot of Auckland is clay. Clay holds water. It drains slowly, swells when wet, and shrinks when it finally dries. That is close to the worst possible foundation for asphalt in a wet winter.
A free-draining sandy subgrade lets water move on. Clay holds it against the underside of your pavement like a sponge pressed to a ceiling. So the saturated layer that gets pumped by traffic stays saturated for weeks, not hours. The same rain that runs off a well-drained site sits and works away at a clay one.
This is why two driveways a street apart can age so differently. It is often not the asphalt. It is what the water is doing underneath, and whether the ground lets it leave. Standing water is the tell, and it is worth learning to read what a puddle is telling you about the base below it.
Why the diagnosis changes the fix
This is the part that matters for your wallet. If you believe potholes are a frost problem, you treat them as a surface problem, and you patch the hole. If you understand they are a water problem, you fix the water path first, then the hole.
Patch a pothole that formed over a saturated, pumping base and you have replaced the lid without draining the tank. The base is still wet. The traffic still pumps. Within a winter or two, the ground gives way beside your fresh patch, or under it, and the same hole comes back a little to the left. Owners read that as a bad repair. Often it was a repair that was never asked to fix the actual cause.
A repair that lasts on a wet Auckland site usually means one or more of:
Finding where the water is entering and sitting, not just where the hole shows.
Cutting the failed area back to sound, dry material rather than skimming the visible dip.
Improving drainage or crossfall so water sheds instead of pooling.
Rebuilding the base properly before the hot mix goes down.
That last point is why a good repair is almost always bigger than the hole you can see. The edges have to be cut back past the damage into sound asphalt, or the new patch is joined to material that is already failing.
What this means for you this winter
You do not need to diagnose the subgrade yourself. You just need to stop treating a returning pothole as bad luck. If a hole keeps coming back in roughly the same spot, water is the reason, and a photo that shows the wider area, any standing water, and the crack pattern tells us far more than the hole alone.
