Hot-mix vs cold-mix asphalt isn't really a price question — it's a longevity, weather, and traffic question. Hot-mix is the industry standard for permanent work and lasts 5–12 years on a typical driveway. Cold-mix is for emergencies, wet conditions, or short-life Quick Fixes and lasts 6–18 months. The right one depends on what you're trying to achieve, not what's cheapest.

How hot-mix works and why it lasts longer

Hot-mix asphalt is a precise factory product: graded aggregate (typically 7–20mm AP), filler (rock dust), and bitumen binder dosed at 4.5–6% by weight, blended hot, and trucked to site in an insulated tipper. On site it's spread, compacted with a roller while still above 110°C, and bonded to the existing asphalt by a thin layer of bitumen emulsion called a tack coat.

The reason it lasts is that the binder fully coats every aggregate particle at high temperature and then locks the matrix together as it cools. The result is a dense, low-air-void surface that doesn't let water in, doesn't oxidise from the inside, and doesn't ravel under traffic load. Done well, a hot-mix patch is indistinguishable from new pavement after the first year.

When hot-mix is the right call

  • Any pothole on a daily-use carpark, driveway, or accessway where you want a 5+ year fix

  • Trench reinstatement after utility work — cold-mix on a trench is a code violation in most council jurisdictions

  • Body-corp common driveways where the next maintenance cycle is 7–10 years out

  • Anywhere with a 12-month workmanship warranty on the line — Rapidpatch only warrants hot-mix patches

  • Dry forecast — hot-mix in active rain bonds badly and the warranty doesn't apply

How cold-mix works

Cold-mix asphalt uses a cutback bitumen (bitumen thinned with a solvent like diesel) or a polymer-modified emulsion that stays workable at ambient temperature. The binder cures by evaporation of the solvent or by breaking of the emulsion, not by cooling. That makes it transportable in bags, storable for months, and applicable in any weather above about 5°C.

The trade-off is density and traffic rating. Cold-mix never reaches the air-void density that hot-mix achieves at the roller. Water gets into the surface faster, the binder oxidises faster, and the matrix ravels under heavy load. That's why it's a Quick Fix tier, not a Permanent tier — it does its job for a season or two, then needs replacing.

When cold-mix is the right call

  • Dangerous pothole, wet conditions, can't wait for the next dry window

  • Single small pothole on a low-traffic driveway where a 12–18 month fix is sufficient

  • Remote rural site where hot-mix delivery is uneconomic or impossible

  • Temporary patch ahead of full resurface scheduled within 6 months

  • Winter pothole on a property where hot-mix can't be supplied until spring

The Rapidpatch tier rule

The Permanent tier uses hot-mix, costs more, books for the next dry window, and carries a 12-month workmanship warranty.

Most homeowners think the question is "which is cheaper". It's not — the question is "which one am I willing to redo, and when". A Quick Fix at $450 redone every 18 months works out the same as a Permanent at $850 every 7 years. The Permanent is also less hassle, looks better, and lets you forget about the spot for years at a time.

Why DIY hardware-store cold-mix usually fails

DIY cold-mix from Mitre10 or Bunnings is a real product that does what it claims — but three things go wrong in untrained hands. First, the binder grade in bagged cold-mix is set for short-term use; the bag might say "permanent" but the binder isn't engineered for it. Second, edge preparation is almost always rushed; without saw-cut vertical edges, the patch ravels at the boundary within a season. Third, compaction is the killer — a hand-tamper achieves maybe 60% of the density a vibratory roller delivers, and undercompacted cold-mix lasts a fraction of properly compacted cold-mix.

Edge cases worth knowing about

  • Chipseal repair: hot-mix is the standard reinstatement for a chipseal pothole — the chipseal layer is just a wearing course over a structural asphalt base, so a hot-mix patch is structurally compatible.

  • Polymer-modified hot-mix: high-traffic carparks (heavy vehicles, fast turns, hot delivery bays) benefit from PMB hot-mix that costs ~20% more but lasts ~50% longer. We'll recommend it when the use-case justifies it.

  • Bulk cold-mix vs bagged: contractor-grade bulk cold-mix uses a polymer-modified emulsion binder and outperforms bagged cold-mix by ~2x in lifespan. It's available to Rapidpatch through Auckland quarry suppliers.

  • Cold-mix-over-cold-mix: a second cold-mix patch over a failing first cold-mix patch doesn't work — the underlying patch needs to be cut out cleanly before any new mix goes in.

Common questions

Per m² supply-and-lay, cold-mix is roughly 40–50% cheaper than hot-mix. Per year of pavement life, hot-mix is dramatically cheaper because it lasts 5–7 times longer. A $450 cold-mix patch redone four times in a decade costs $1,800; a single $850 hot-mix patch lasting 10 years costs $850. The maths is rarely close.

Hot-mix every time. Auckland's wet winters and UV-heavy summers are the worst-case scenario for cold-mix binder. We see cold-mix patches in shaded body-corp carparks lasting 18 months and the same patches in full-sun forecourts lasting 9 months. Hot-mix patches in either site typically last 7–12 years.

Yes — NZ winter doesn't get cold enough to stop hot-mix work outright. What we wait for is a dry surface and a 2-hour rain-free window. In Auckland, that's typically achievable 3–4 days a week even in July–August. If the surface is dry, ambient temperature down to 5°C is fine for hot-mix.

Hot-mix in Auckland comes from the major plants — Fulton Hogan, Higgins, Downer, HEB Construction, and a handful of regional independents. They supply both their own crews and contractors like Rapidpatch. Cold-mix bagged is sold through Mitre10, Bunnings, PlaceMakers, and ITM. Bulk contractor-grade cold-mix comes from Winstone Aggregates and Atlas Concrete.

Look at the edges. Hot-mix patches have sharp, saw-cut, dense vertical edges that match the surrounding pavement profile. Cold-mix patches typically have feathered, soft, slightly proud edges and a slightly rougher surface texture. Six months in, a cold-mix patch is usually visibly raveling at the boundary; a hot-mix patch isn't.

Yes — occasionally we'll lay a hot-mix structural patch and feather a cold-mix transition strip around it to handle a slight grade mismatch with the surrounding pavement. That's an engineering choice, not a cost-saving one. Mixing hot and cold within a single defect to save money is a false economy and we won't quote it that way.
