Central Auckland doesn't have the region's most potholes — rural Rodney and Franklin own that title. What the isthmus has, on Auckland Transport's own numbers, is the region's worst response record: 85.4% of dispatches met target (every other area beat 91%), the slowest 10% of public reports waited 3.5 days or more, and 47.9% of public reports were closed with no repair recorded.
The data is AT's complete pothole dispatch log — 26,863 records, January 2024 to June 2026 — released to us under LGOIMA (case CAS-1344360-H7J1V4). Central's share: 3,698 dispatches across Remuera, Mt Eden, Mt Roskill, Onehunga, Ponsonby, Grey Lynn and the CBD, costing $1.22M in itemised claims — the highest spend of any area in Auckland.

Central's problem isn't volume — it's the misses
Put Central's numbers next to the rest of the region and the pattern is unmistakable. South Auckland's crews hit response targets 99.1% of the time; Rodney's 99.0%; the regional average is 96.1%. Central: 85.4% — one dispatch in seven missed its target, and the 90th-percentile response on completed public reports stretched to 85 hours. If a pothole report in Auckland is going to sit, it sits on the isthmus.
The bin rate compounds it: 47.9% of Central's 2,468 public reports were closed "No Action Required" — no repair recorded, no reason logged (AT declined our request for reasons under LGOIMA s17(e); it holds no breakdown). Grafton Rd's reports closed no-action 79% of the time; West Tāmaki Rd's, 87%. Duplicates on busy commuter streets explain part of that — a Dominion Rd pothole gets reported by fifty people — but the data can't say how much, because nobody recorded why.
And it's the region's most expensive area to patch: $1.22M in itemised claims over 29 months, a third of Auckland's entire itemised pothole spend, on just 14% of its dispatches. Dense traffic, night-works requirements and traffic management make every isthmus repair dearer.
Body corps, villas, commercial forecourts: where central's private asphalt fails
Central's private asphalt is old, shaded and shared: villa-era driveways in Mt Eden and Remuera, body-corp ROWs in Epsom and Grey Lynn, retail and café forecourts on the Dominion Rd and Ponsonby strips. Most of it was laid decades ago, and shared drives concentrate wheel loads exactly where the seal is weakest. The early warnings are the same as on the public network — water pooling, then alligator cracking, then the hole.
