Interconnected block and alligator cracking on Auckland asphalt.

Pothole repair pricing in New Zealand varies more than most buyers expect — a single patch can be NZ$450 in central Auckland and NZ$1,100 in remote Otago. The variation is real, but it follows four predictable variables. This guide sets the 2026 NZ price ranges and explains what moves the number up or down so you can read any quote with confidence.

Pothole repair is a Rapidpatch service. Auckland direct service is available now — we'll come back to you within 24 hours with a fixed-price quote from a few photos.

Outside Auckland, we're onboarding approved-partner specialists region by region. 5-business-day response with quote and ETA. Same Rapidpatch fixed-price discipline, same 12-month workmanship guarantee on Rapidpatch-installed work. Urgent or large jobs — phone (027) 737 2858.

Fair Trading Act backup: if we can't match you with a vetted partner in your region, we'll refer you to an independent specialist or return your photos and quote at no cost, no obligation.

2026 NZ pothole repair pricing — indicative ranges

These are Rapidpatch's 2026 fixed-price ranges for private-property work — driveways, carparks, body-corp commons, retail forecourts. Every quote is photo-based and returned within 24 hours.

  • Tier 1 Quick Fix (cold-mix temporary patch): from NZ$350 — buy 6–12 months while you plan a permanent repair

  • Tier 2 Permanent Patch (hot-mix, cut-and-fill, compacted): from NZ$700 per patch

  • Multi-patch bundle (3–8 patches on the same site, same visit): from NZ$950 total

  • Trench reinstatement (utility cut, water-main repair edge): from NZ$2,400

  • Carpark wheel-path reinstatement: from NZ$180/m²

  • Drive-thru lane repair (rutting, structural reinstatement): from NZ$220/m²

  • Commercial carpark resurface (full mill-and-overlay): from NZ$25,000 depending on area and access

  • After-hours / overnight scheduling: + 40%

  • Regional surcharge (outside Auckland metro): typically +10–30% to cover travel and partner network costs

Every Rapidpatch quote is a fixed price, not a time-and-materials estimate. The fixed price holds even if the job takes longer than expected on the day — you get the AGM defensibility and the budget protection.

The four variables that move the price

  1. Area — square metres of damage. A 0.5 m² pothole and a 4 m² alligator zone aren't the same product. Quotes scale roughly linearly above the minimum job size.

  2. Depth — surface-only failures need a thinner cut; full structural failures need to go down to the base layer (80–120 mm). Depth doubles roughly every 40 mm and the price tracks it.

  3. Surface and traffic load — a residential driveway repair, a 24/7 commercial carpark, and an arterial road cold-joint are three different jobs. Higher traffic load needs deeper mix, better compaction, and tighter tolerances.

  4. Access and urgency — a residential driveway you can roll up to during the day costs less than a city-fringe retail carpark that needs after-hours scheduling, traffic management, and a closure plan.

AT and council pricing vs private-property pricing

Auckland Transport and other NZ councils repair their road network through term-maintenance contracts — Downer, Fulton Hogan, HEB, and a handful of others. Those contracts cover the road and the footpath, paid out of rates and NZTA co-funding. You can report a pothole on a public road but you can't choose the contractor or directly pay for the work.

Private property is a different market. Driveways, carparks, body-corp commons, retail forecourts, industrial yards — these are all out of scope for AT and council. The owner or body corp pays, the work is competitive, and the pricing in this guide applies.

If you're not sure which side a pothole sits on (driveway-meets-road cold joint, shared accessway, kerb-cut transition) we can read the photos and tell you who's responsible.

Cheapest vs cheapest-per-year-of-life

The cheapest pothole repair in NZ is a bag of cold-mix from a hardware store at NZ$30 — shovel it in, tamp it down, done. It lasts 3–18 months depending on traffic. Then you repeat. A NZ$700 hot-mix permanent patch lasts 8–12 years. The cost-per-year-of-useful-life on the permanent patch is roughly half. For most private-property owners and body corps the permanent patch wins on every metric except up-front cash.

DIY cold-mix is fine for emergency patching ahead of a sale, an open home, or a visit from an insurance assessor. It's not fine as a permanent repair.

What's included in the price

  • Photo-based fixed-price quote returned within 24 hours

  • Cutting, removing, and disposing of the failed asphalt

  • Tack coat, fresh hot-mix asphalt, compaction

  • Site cleanup

  • Same-day PDF report with before/after photos, fixed-price invoice, surface description

  • 12-month workmanship warranty on Rapidpatch-installed work

Common questions

Three reasons: distance from the nearest hot-mix plant (mix has to arrive on site hot, which limits radius), labour availability, and traffic-management cost. Auckland metro is cheapest because all three are dense. Remote Otago, West Coast, or Northland adds 10–30% to a comparable Auckland quote.

Almost never. Compare cost per year of useful life. A NZ$350 cold-mix patch that lasts 6 months is NZ$700/year. A NZ$700 hot-mix patch that lasts 10 years is NZ$70/year. The cheaper number on the quote is often the more expensive product.

For an emergency patch ahead of a sale, an open home, or an insurance assessor visit — yes. NZ$30 a bag, shovel it in, tamp it down. It will hold for 3–18 months. It won't replace a permanent hot-mix repair and it won't survive a winter under regular traffic. Treat DIY cold-mix as a band-aid, not a fix.

Hot-mix plants run business hours. Overnight or weekend work needs a special mix order, crew at penal rates, and a lighting plan. The +40% surcharge covers the real additional cost. Worth it for retail, hospitality, drive-thru, or any site where daytime closure would cost more in lost trade than the surcharge.

Every Rapidpatch quote shows the price exclusive of GST and the GST-inclusive total separately, so committee minutes and head-office accounting can use whichever number they need. We're GST-registered and provide a tax invoice on every job.

If a tenant or visitor damaged a vehicle on your property and you're now repairing the cause, ask for an insurance-ready PDF report with the job — we provide one as standard. The report is the evidence you'll need if a claim is lodged against the body corp or property owner.
